Title: Whitby Abbey - Quick Visitor Guide
Post by jduck1979 on Jun 6th, 2013 at 6:01pm
The oldest & most recognised building in town.
Built c. 653AD, burn't down by Vikings... rebuilt sometime later by one of William the Conqueror's Knights, closed down in 1538 after King Henry the 8th got a bit pissed off at the Catholic Church. Flogged off to the Cholmley family, who borrowed bits of it to built their mansion which now serves as the visitor centre.
It also took a few knocks when the German Navy started lobbing shells at the town in World War 1.
